The University of Northern Colorado will begin a COVID-19 surveillance testing program Tuesday for students who live in university housing.

UNC will randomly assign students to one of four groups. Each group will be scheduled for testing within four weeks of the assignment, in hopes of testing all students on campus.

“The purpose of this testing program is to allow the university to monitor and address real-time trends and prevalence and make timely decisions on intervention and response,” UNC officials said in the announcement.

Two COVID-19 outbreaks have been attached to UNC at the university’s athletic program and Sigma Kappa sorority, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. UNC reported 57 student and employee cases since July.

UNC has already begun the surveillance testing on its student-athletes, testing between 50% and 100% of the athletes each week since Oct. 1 per NCAA practice requirements.

The COVID-19 tests will be administered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at pop-up tent locations throughout campus. Testing is complimentary to students.

The students involved in the program will include those living in UNC residence halls and the Arlington Park Apartments.

Students will receive an email from UNC Housing and Residential Education with their assigned testing group and schedule, and a form to be completed before the test.
