327 arrested during Colorado’s Thanksgiving DUI enforcement period

In Colorado, 327 people were arrested for driving under the influence within 10 days during the state’s Thanksgiving DUI enforcement period, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced.

The annual Thanksgiving enforcement period was held from Nov. 20 to Nov. 30, including increased patrols and DUI checkpoints from CDOT, Colorado State Patrol and 103 law enforcement agencies.

“Too many people continue to operate their vehicles while intoxicated or high,” said CSP Chief Matthew Packard. “We hope the message is sobering for each impaired driver removed from the roads this past enforcement period.”

Thanksgiving weekend also saw three fatal car crashes in the state, resulting in three deaths, CDOT said.

Of the 327 DUI arrests, 27 were from the Denver Police Department, 37 were from Colorado Springs and 27 were from El Paso. The Colorado State Patrol made 71 arrests.

This year’s arrests were lower than last Thanksgiving, which saw 430 arrests by 99 agencies in the same time frame, according to CDOT.

Colorado’s Older Driver Safety Awareness Week kicks off Monday

The decrease is likely a result of COVID-19 as Thanksgiving gatherings were discouraged throughout the state. In over a dozen Colorado counties, all personal gatherings are prohibited under Level Red COVID-19 restrictions.

Two more DUI enforcement periods are scheduled for 2020 from Dec. 4 to Dec. 14 and Dec. 29 to Jan. 2 to cover holiday parties.

To help reduce impaired driving, CDOT is offering 200 $10 Lyft credit codes on Thursdays at 10 a.m. The codes are available online to residents of Denver, Colorado Springs and Thornton who sign a pledge to never drive impaired.
