Aurora man gets 57 years for killing wife’s cousin after paternity dispute

An Aurora man was sentenced to 57 years in prison last week after a jury found him guilty of killing his estranged wife’s cousin and attempting to kill his wife after she told him one of their children wasn’t his.

Kelynn Lewis, 34, was arrested two days after the shooting, which happened Feb. 9, 2024 in the 1700 block of Paris Street in Aurora. Officers arrived at the residence at about 8:30 p.m., where they spoke with Lewis’ estranged wife.

She told police that she had texted Lewis that day to inform him that he was not the biological father of one of their children, according to a news release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Lewis responded by threatening to kill her.

Lewis, armed with a handgun, later forced his way inside his wife’s apartment, where she was braiding her hair with her cousin Vatrice Little, 35. Lewis then opened fire; his wife fell to floor, pretending to have been shot, while Little, who stepped in between Lewis and his wife, was shot five times and killed.

Lewis’ wife was unharmed. Her four children, who range in age from 3 to 9, were present during the shooting.

Lewis was found guilty on Feb. 13 of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, domestic violence, four counts of child abuse and witness tampering. He also received a violent crime sentence enhancer due to the use of a weapon during the crime.

Adams County District Court judge Mark Warner sentenced Lewis on Friday to 57 years in prison.
