Boulder police arrest attempted arson suspect

Boulder police on Wednesday arrested a suspect in connection with an apparent attempted arson.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex near the 800 block of Moorhead Circle in South Boulder, the Boulder Police Department said on its X account.

According to an arrest affidavit, police initially responded to a “behavioral check,” with the 911 caller allegedly telling the operator he had “lit the fuse” and planned to kill a child.

Responding officers found that smoke was coming from the apartment, and Boulder Fire Department personnel entered the apartment, the affidavit said.

Firefighters rescued a dog from the apartment, as well as Trigg Michaels Bader, 33, who was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters also found containers tied together with tubes inside the apartment, which led the county’s bomb squad and hazmat teams to respond. An investigation revealed the materials were not hazardous.

Officers discovered a burned book in the oven, believed to be the cause of the smoke, as well as other items which had been set on fire.

Nearby residents were temporarily displaced from their homes during the incident but were eventually allowed to return to their homes when crews determined things were safe, police said.

Bader was arrested by police and faces a charge of fourth-degree arson, criminal attempt to commit a class four felony and cruelty to animals. His bond has not yet been set.
