Broncos CB Pat Surtain gets $5 million raise and it could end up being $10 million

CENTENNIAL — Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain II got a big raise Tuesday and then he worked to raise money for local kids.

Surtain agreed to a reworked contract on Denver’s first day of organized team activities. A source said he gets a $5 million boost to his 2026 base salary, increasing it from $7.632 million to $12.632 million. And he would get an additional $5 million in 2026 if he makes the Pro Bowl or is named All-Pro. Going to the Pro Bowl only would count for the bonus if he is an initial selection, not an alternate.

Surtain, entering his sixth season, has made four straight Pro Bowls, none as an alternate. He was named All-Pro in 2022 and in 2024, when he won NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

So he has a very good chance to land the entire $10 million.

“We talked about it before, but I think it’s a testament to the ownership and the Broncos as an organization,” he said of his new deal Tuesday night at The Patrick Surtain II Foundation’s “Topgolf Challenge with PS” at Topgolf in Centennial. “Honestly, I wanted to be here. I want to be a Bronco. So they heavily invested into me as well as much as I’ve invested into them. It’s an honor and a privilege to be here for sure.”

Surtain also is thrilled to be able to help others through his foundation, which works to inspire and empower underserved youth through educational opportunities, mentorship and community impact initiatives. Tuesday’s event featured a silent auction as one way to raise money.

“I feel like my purpose is bigger than football and being able to give back to the youth and everybody,’’ he said.

Surtain received plenty of congratulations Tuesday on his new contract. On hand were a number of Broncos players, including recently acquired wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and all the team’s rookies. Surtain said with a smile that vice president of player development Ray Jackson made it “mandatory” for the rookies to come show their support.

Surtain signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension in 2024 that kicks in this season. So his new deal means it will be worth at least $101 million and potentially $106 million by the end of the season.

The cornerback market has exploded since Surtain was locked up to his extension. When he signed it, his average annual salary of $24 million made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. Prior to Tuesday, he had dropped to No. 6. But he is back up No. 4, with an average of $25.125 million per season.

“It means a lot,’’ Surtain said of the Broncos giving him a raise before his extension even kicked in. “Shout out to the (Walton-Penner ownership group). Shout out to everyone (involved). I just feel like honestly this team is something special and it’s something that I want to be a part of for years to come. So I told myself I want to be a Bronco forever for everybody that’s put trust in me, for everybody who’s seen I’m a valuable piece for this team. I’m glad we got things to be able to work out.”

Surtain was asked who had made the first move regarding his new deal, the Broncos or his agent Tory Dandy.

“It’s something that was worked out mutually,’’ he said. “I think we mutually agreed on where things are heading further on. So everything was positive going through that situation.”

Surtain said he gave no consideration for not taking part in spring drills if a deal wasn’t done, saying that never “crossed my mind” because he “wanted to be out there with the team.”

Surtain was on the books to be Denver’s highest-paid player when he signed his extension. Yet last year, outside linebacker Nik Bonitto got a four-year, $106 million extension and Zach Allen a four-year, $102 million deal, with both new contracts also starting in 2026. But if Surtain gets the full $10 million raise, he will surpass Allen’s figure and equal Bonitto’s.

Surtain mostly shrugged off a question about whether it was important for him to get a raise due to having dropped after being briefly the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback.

“Not necessarily,’’ he said. “I think it’s just part of it. I think (the raise is) a testament to my hard work and what I’ve been able to show on the field for the past few years.”

Surtain was fired up to take the field at Broncos Park on Tuesday after Denver went 14-3 last season before losing 10-7 to New England in the AFC Championship Game. The Broncos will continue with OTAs on Wednesday and Thursday and June 9-11 before spring drills conclude with a June 16-18 mandatory minicamp.

“There’s a good saying from (defensive coordinator Vance Joseph on Tuesday) basically saying it’s a new year,’’ Surtain said. “Whatever we did last year doesn’t matter now. It’s a new slate. Teams are getting better and better, but we got to find a way to get better than we were last year as we fell a little short last year. So we definitely got high hopes and aspirations.”

Surtain vows to get better, saying he worked during the offseason to become “stronger” after having missed three games last season with a partially torn pectoral muscle.

The Broncos have a tough first six regular-season games in 2026, opening up at Kansas City, home to Jacksonville, home to the Los Angeles Rams, at San Francisco, at the Los Angeles Chargers and home to defending champion Seattle. But Surtain called it “exciting” because “in order to reach the top, you got to play the best.”

The only significant outside addition the Broncos brought in after free agency started was Waddle, Surtain’s good buddy and former Alabama teammate who was acquired from Miami.

“We’ve got a great team all around, so it’s more than enough, honestly,” Surtain said. “But I’m glad he’s on the team.”

The game against the Rams will feature the last three NFL Defensive Player of the Year winners in edge rusher Myles Garrett, who hoisted the trophy in 2023 and 2025 with Cleveland, and Surtain. Surtain said he was “shocked” to see Garrett traded from the Browns to the Rams on Monday. He was asked if he’s looking to reclaim the award from Garrett this season.

“Why not?’’ he said. “Shoot. Let’s just keep going, me and him back and forth.”

If Surtain picks up another such trophy in 2026, look for another raise to come in 2027.
