Colorado Rapids announce downtown Denver soccer experience this summer

Downtown Denver visitors have an opportunity to play, watch and celebrate soccer this summer.

The Colorado Rapids are teaming up with the Downtown Denver Partnership to create an “immersive fan zone experience” focused on connecting the local soccer community with the global sport in conjunction with the World Cup happening this year, according to a news release.

Skyline Park now sports a soccer field, located on Arapahoe Street between 15th and 16th streets. The park will be transformed into a “vibrant soccer oasis,” including food vendors, retailers and guests such as Rapids players and Denver celebrities starting in June, according to the release.

The DDP seeks to build an “economically competitive center city.” Founded in 1955, the partnership consists of more than 500 organizations and is a leading voice for private-sector businesses in Denver, according to its website.

Along with providing a variety of entertainment, the soccer celebration will make the Visa Street Soccer Park and Bank of America fields available for drop-in play. Street Soccer USA, a nonprofit focused on building the national soccer community, will lead youth and adult programming at the celebration. There will be immersive experiences for fans of all ages, according to the release.

When The Denver Gazette asked about security, budget and hours, a DDP spokesperson said more details about the event’s logistics will be available closer to June.

The celebration will take place during the FIFA World Cup and will host live game viewings for all 38 days of the tournament.

Though Major League Soccer pauses play during the tournament, the celebration will ensure that the Rapids remain at the forefront of the sport, officials said.

“The Colorado Rapids Soccer Celebration will witness every moment of the summer’s global action,” according to the release. The event aims to unite the soccer community in a “festive, family-friendly” environment.

“Hosting the Colorado Rapids Soccer Celebration in the heart of Downtown Denver is an incredible catalyst for summer activity,” DDP President Kourtny Garrett said in the release. “Downtown is ready and excited to be the hub for a premier soccer experience this summer, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome fans, champion our businesses and celebrate the sport.”
