Colorado Rapids reportedly adding 2 U.S. national team players from European clubs

The Colorado Rapids offseason roster overhaul continued Wednesday as the club reportedly signed U.S. National Team goalkeeper Zack Steffen and inched closer to adding American attacker Djordje Mihailovic.

According to a report by Tom Bogert of The Athletic, Colorado reached a deal to bring the former 2018 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year back to the United States on a three-year deal. Steffen departs the reigning European and English Premier League champions Manchester City to join Colorado.

Additionally, the Rapids traded the MLS rights to its former starting goalkeeper William Yarbrough to the San Jose Earthquakes, The Athletic reported.

Steffen, who according to the report will not take up a designated player (DP) slot on the roster, is an instant upgrade at the goalkeeper position, but has battled injuries over the last few seasons that cost him the starting role on the USMNT.

Steffen had knee surgery in June, which prevented him from going out on a season-long loan this year. The former Columbus Crew goalkeeper was sold to Manchester City in 2019 for a reported £7 million transfer fee. Steffen spent much of his time in Europe on different loan assignments, appearing for Fortuna Düsseldorf in the German Bundesliga and last season at Middlesbrough of the English Championship.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper has made 29 appearances for the USMNT.

Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Mihailovic, an attacking midfielder and winger, will join Colorado for a club record fee in excess of $3 million, according to Bogert’s report. The 25-year-old has played for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands first division since 2022, scoring just one league goal in 23 appearances.

The expensive transfer fee means Mihailovic would be a designated player on the Rapids roster.

Mihailovic came up through the Chicago Fire’s youth system, signing as a homegrown player in 2017. He was traded to CF Montreal ahead of the 2021 season. That year he set a Montreal single-season club record with 16 assists. He’s made 11 appearances with the U.S. National Team, scoring three goals.

The moves come a day after the club announced it was parting ways with two veteran players, centerback Danny Wilson and winger Sam Nicholson, and is part of a massive overhaul for the club that finished bottom of the Western Conference last season.

Already, Colorado has brought in new head coach Chris Armas and parted ways with former team captain Jack Price and attacking talisman Diego Rubio. The club also signed free-agent attacker Omir Fernandez last month.
