Colorado State Patrol issues reminder for auto theft victim assistance
Time is running out to apply for an assistance program for motorists whose vehicles were stolen within the last two years.
Funding for the program this fiscal year is coming to a close at the end of May, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol. The current time period for victims includes anyone whose car was stolen after April 24, 2024.
Colorado is the most likely state for a motorist’s car to be stolen, according to a study from Save Max Auto. The study said Colorado ranks first with 2,852 thefts per 100,000 residents, with 167,648 thefts between 2021 to 2025.
The study used data from the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer, and looked at thefts in each state.
Despite the study results, vehicle thefts in the state actually declined in 2025 — with auto thefts dropping 56% from 2021 levels.
Colorado reported 16,291 motor vehicle thefts in 2025 — a 34% decline from the previous year, according to the 2025 Colorado Auto Theft Annual Report from the Auto Theft Intelligence Coordination Center.
Nationally, car thefts were also down in 2025, by about 23%. Additionally, 80% of vehicles stolen in 2025 were recovered within the same year.
The victims’ assistance program has been an ongoing initiative of the CSP’s Victim Services Unit. It aims to help defray monetary impacts experienced by those who get their cars stolen by providing for alternative transportation methods, storage and towing fees, vehicle cleaning and repair reimbursement.
To qualify for aid, victims at the time of the theft must possess a Colorado driver’s license, valid vehicle registration, an insurance declaration page, a copy of the police report and any applicable documentation such as repair receipts or quotes, according to the CSP news release.
Applications can continue to be submitted, but any applications submitted after May 31 will not be funded until July after the new fiscal year starts, according to the CSP.
