Denver man flees trial ahead of conviction for child prostitution charges
A sex offender convicted of child prostitution charges fled his trial ahead of the guilty verdict and is now on the run from authorities.
Carl Vincent Avery, 61, met the 17-year-old victim in January 2023 near Civic Center Park and brought her to a house in Aurora, where he gave her meth in exchange for sex, according to a post from the Denver District Attorney’s office.
Authorities said this happened three times over the course of the month, with the girl staying with Avery for several days at a time.
Avery had his trial this week and was accused of three counts of patronizing a child prostitute and three counts of distributing controlled substances to a minor. However, Avery failed to appear in court for the reading of his verdict and was declared a fugitive on Thursday.
Avery is also a convicted sex offender. In 2000, he was convicted of third degree sexual assault, sexual assault on a child and attempted sexual assault on a child. He was also convicted in 1998 of sexual assault of a child, according to the public sex offender registry.
Apart from his sex offenses, Avery also has an extensive criminal record, including arrests for third-degree assault, violation of a restraining order and forcible entry.
Authorities are still searching for Avery. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact 911 or the Denver Police Department. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-7867.
