A former psychologist who worked for high schools in Jeffco Public Schools was sentenced to at least five years in prison after his conviction for sexually assaulting a student.

James Michael Chevrier, 39, was given the sentence by Jefferson County District Judge Diego Hunt on Thursday. Chevrier was convicted in January of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and of drug-related charges and of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The crimes occurred when Chevrier was employed as a staff psychologist at Green Mountain High School and Bear Creek High School. He also was a staff member at Evergreen High School between 2022 and 2023 and the Cherry Creek School District between 2021 and 2022.

During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors, the victim and her father asked for the maximum sentence of 12 years. The victim testified that the abuse began her freshman year of high school and has caused her lasting trauma, including a lack of trust in adults.

“I can’t talk to an adult without second-guessing myself,” she said, according to a news release from the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. 

Her father said he turned to the school for help with personal issues his daughter was facing, only for Chevrier to abuse her.

Chevrier was ultimately arrested after an anonymous tip was submitted about the abuse. He was arrested in May 2025.

In addition to the sexual assault of a child charge, Chevrier was convicted of possessing MDMA, possessing ketamine with intent to distribute and of providing alcohol and marijuana to minors.

As part of his sentence, he will be required to comply with sex offender treatment before his release.

Chevrier’s case was one of eight sexual misconduct-related incidents throughout Jeffco Public Schools between the end of 2023 and March 2026, including an investigation into David Weiss, the school district’s former chief of schools, that involved possession of child sexual assault material in December 2024.
