Man arrested by Commerce City police months after fatal racing crash
A 22-year-old man was arrested by Commerce City police months after he allegedly killed his passenger when he crashed his car while racing.
Brandon Sargent-Zuniga, 22, was arrested Saturday, about two and a half months after the crash. Sargent-Zuniga was stopped by a Colorado State Patrol trooper on Jan. 16 for speeding and had a dead woman in his car, according to a news release from the Commerce City Police Department.
Police said Sargent-Zuniga was suspected of racing when he was involved in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 270 that injured his passenger. Instead of stopping and calling 911, he fled the scene, went home and switched cars and was attempting to transport the woman to the hospital when he was stopped, according to the release.
Sargent-Zuniga was arrested after being stopped on the way to the hospital, 9NEWS reported. He was rebooked into the Adams County jail after he was formally charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. He remained jailed Tuesday on $50,000 bail.
Police did not identify the woman killed in the crash. The Adams County Coroner did not respond to a question about the woman’s identity and cause of death by the time this story published.
