Man dead after deputy-involved shooting in Douglas County

A man was found dead inside a Franktown home Sunday after a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputy fired shots while responding to a reported assault in progress, authorities said.

Deputies were called at about 12:53 p.m. to a home in the 3200 block of Weasel Way after a child reported that an adult man was assaulting their grandmother. Another child was also inside the residence at the time, according to the DCSO.

“These are particularly deadly calls for officers all across the country,” Sheriff Darren Weekly said in a statement. “This one evolved extremely quickly and the deputy had to react quickly to save his own life.”

When deputies arrived, one child ran out of the home, followed shortly by an adult woman. A deputy then looked through the open front door and saw a man inside holding a handgun, authorities said. The man pointed the weapon toward the deputy at which point a deputy fired shots, according to police.

The man was later found dead inside.

It remains under investigation whether the man fired at deputies and it is not yet clear whether the fatal gunshot wound was caused by the deputy or was self-inflicted, Weekly said.

The children and the woman were safely removed from the home. After the shooting, a coordinated response involving the Douglas County Regional SWAT Team and multiple outside agencies secured the residence.

Agencies assisting at the scene included the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, Parker Police Department, Castle Rock Police Department, South Metro Fire Rescue and Franktown Fire Protection District.

During the response, a Douglas County Regional SWAT armored vehicle hydroplaned in heavy rain, and rolled. The deputy driving the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, officials said.

The 23rd Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team has been activated to investigate the officer-involved shooting. The investigation remains ongoing and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available, according to DCSO.
