Extra law enforcement will be on the streets over Halloween weekend
Planning on drinking and driving while dressed up as Batman this weekend? Law enforcement says think again.
The Colorado Department of Transportation along with the Colorado State Patrol and law enforcement agencies around the state will have extra enforcement on the roadways this weekend looking for impaired drivers.
“If consuming alcohol is a part of your Halloween plan this coming weekend, expand your plan to include a designated sober driver or plan not to drive. Decide that drinking and driving is not an option,” said Matthew Packard, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol in a press release. “As holiday celebrations often lead to an increase of impaired drivers, our plan includes increasing our presence and enforcement activities on Colorado roadways.”
Heightened law enforcement will be seen beginning Friday and will remain in the field through Monday, according to the release.
Since Jan. 1, 32% of the 461 motor vehicle fatalities on the Colorado roads have been due to impaired driving, so in an effort to reduce those numbers, 86 agencies across the state will assist in the effort.
Authorities are urging those who don’t have a sober driver to use a personal breathalyzer, so they know when it is safe to drive, according to the release.
“Every one of us has a personal responsibility to be safe and accountable,” said Darrell Lingk, CDOT director of the Office of Transportation in a press release.
“That includes abiding by COVID-19 guidelines and never driving impaired. Impaired driving is one of the biggest threats to the safety of our transportation network, and CDOT is working with law enforcement partners across the state to remove this threat from Colorado roads this Halloween weekend.”
