Nikola Jokic finishes second in Most Valuable Player race

There’s a new back-to-back Most Valuable Player ruling the NBA.

Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander received 83 of 100 first-place votes to repeat as MVP. He totaled 939 points in the voting to become the 14th player in NBA history to win the regular season’s highest individual honor in consecutive years.

Denver’s Nikola Jokic, the most recent back-to-back winner in 2021 and 2022, received 10 first-place votes and totaled 634 points. San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama placed third with 569 points, receiving five first-place votes. Lakers guard Luka Doncic placed fourth, while Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, who received the two other first-place votes, placed fifth.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder to the NBA’s best regular-season record, 64-18, and finished as the NBA’s second-leading scorer.

After leading the league in assists and rebounds per game, Jokic finished in the top two for a sixth consecutive season. Larry Bird and Bill Russell are the only other players in NBA history to finish in the top two in six consecutive seasons.
