Broncos announce plans to build $175 million state-of-the-art training facility at existing site in Englewood
ENGLEWOOD — Before practice got underway Tuesday, Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain II checked out an artist’s rendering of what the team’s new practice facility is expected to look like in 2026.
He loved what he saw.
“It’s spectacular from the looks of it,’’ Surtain said after practice. “It’s exciting.”
The Broncos announced earlier in the day plans to build a new three-story, 205,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art training facility and team headquarters due to be completed prior to the 2026 season. The facility will be built on the existing site of Centura Health Training Center in Englewood.
The project is estimated to cost $175 million and will be 30% larger than the existing facility. Construction will begin in the spring and it will be privately funded by the Walton-Penner ownership group, which bought the team in August 2022 for a then-record $4.65 billion.
“Our vision is to create a new home for the Denver Broncos that reflects our values of winning and teamwork with a modern Colorado design,” Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner said in a statement. “While we considered several options to modify our current facility, we decided to do this the right way by building a new player-centered headquarters with an efficient layout and the latest amenities.”
The Broncos hope a new facility will contribute to winning. There is hope it will help attract free agents and help the team retain players. Penner said in his statement that the Broncos want to “foster a championship environment in pursuit of our goals on and off the field.”
The ownership group this year spent $100 million in improvements to Empower Field at Mile High. So that’s already $275 million that has been committed to facilities.
“It’s a testament to the ownership group and how much they value us and how much they’re invested towards the team in making sure the players get the best of the best,’’ said Surtain, who is in his third season and would still be with the team in 2026 if he signs a contract extension off his rookie deal. “A big shout-out goes to them for starting that structure.”
The facility will be located west of the current facility on the plaza level and will connect to the 115,000-square-foot Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse, which was built in 2014. The entire facility will comprise more than 320,000 square feet on the 26-acre campus.
The first floor will be home to player spaces, which will be increased by more than 21,000 square feet, approximately one-third larger than the current space. It will include an expanded locker room, a weight room, meeting rooms, sports-performance spaces and other areas.
Football operations will occupy the second floor and business operations on the third floor. More than 70 employees eventually will move from Empower Field to the new facility.
The facility will feature underground parking, an open-air mezzanine to host events and a new berm for fans to watch training camp.
“This is a transformative time for the Denver Broncos led by the Walton-Penner family ownership group that has demonstrated a deep and impactful commitment to investing in world-class facilities,” said Broncos president Damani Leech. “We are thrilled to share plans for a new team headquarters with Broncos Country, bringing together our organization and contributing to a positive culture that supports the No. 1 goal of winning. The combination of layout, collaborative spaces, flexibility and size will place the Broncos’ new training facility among the very best in all of sports.”
According to the team, construction on the new facility is not expected to significantly impact the Broncos’ day-to-day operations and the team plans to continue to host fans at training camp using temporary seating areas.
The Broncos have partnered with HOK, a global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm, and the Rockwell Group, a multi-disciplinary architecture and design firm, on the design of the facility.
“It looks incredible,’’ Broncos guard Quinn Meinerz said after seeing plans for the new facility. “The ownership group has been nothing short of incredible here. They’ve consistently invested in not only us as the players but also with the fan experience at the stadium. So, it is incredible to have that continued support from our ownership group. The pictures look really cool and I can’t even imagine what it’s going to look like.”
According to Leech, the Broncos’ process of designing a new facility began a year ago. The team toured practice facilities of a number of pro sports teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins of the NFL and the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors of the NBA.
The Broncos’ current facility was mostly built in 1990 with the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse added 24 years later.
In a survey of players done by the NFL Players Association and released last March, the Broncos received a D-plus “locker room” rating. Many of the locker-room complaints in the survey, in which players remained anonymous, had to do with small size of it and the need for bigger lockers, more showers and more bathroom stalls.
Now, the Broncos are planning all sorts of improvements, including to the locker room.
“Tons of advantages,’’ Meinerz said of what he expects. “Everything’s going to be state of the art.”
