Colorado small town dubbed one of ‘happiest’ in America

A company called TheTravel recently published a list of the top 10 happiest towns in America, and Silverton, Colorado took ninth place.

TheTravel examined metrics such as poverty rate, median household income, median property value, education, and crime and safety to determine America’s happiest small towns. The towns on the list have the lowest poverty rates, crime rates, and unemployment rates among other small towns in America. They also have populations of less than 8,000 residents (as of the 2020 Decennial Census).

According to TheTravel, Silverton’s low crime rate, unemployment rate, and historical charm contribute to its happiness level. Silverton has an unemployment rate of 5.2%, a crime rate of 17.1%, and a poverty rate of 19.2%. The town’s cost of living index is 93.2.

Located within the San Juan Mountains, Silverton was a mining camp in its boom time during the late 1800s. The mining industry declined in the early 1990s, and the town’s population of about 2,000 dropped to about 600 residents. The town’s 2020 population is 622, according to TheTravel.

Downtown Silverton still has its historic charm, boasting Victorian architecture (like the Grand Imperial Hotel), the ghost town of Animas Forks, and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

White Rock, New Mexico took first place on the TheTravel ranking. This small town has a poverty rate of 2%, an unemployment rate of 3.1%, and crime rate of 19.8%.
