Crime spree in Colorado mountain towns included alleged theft of $15,000 in jewelry

A scary situation unfolded in Colorado’s ski country in mid-October involving an alleged armed robbery attempt followed by an alleged burglary in a neighboring ski town village. On October 26, a suspect in the case was arrested.

The incident is said to have started at about 4:00 a.m. on October 20, when suspect Mamadou Gatta Sow, 40, allegedly attempted an armed robbery at the Maverik Gas Station in Avon. Despite reportedly brandishing a firearm, Gatta Sow failed to obtain anything of value and left.

It is then said that Gatta Sow traveled to Vail Village, using a blunt object to smash and window and break into Lamina Jewelry, where he is accused of stealing $15,000 worth of jewelry after attempting to steal more than $50,000 worth of products.

Investigators were led to Gatta Sow as a suspect through analyzing security footage, license plate readers, and forensic efforts conducted at both crime scenes. Interviews with witnesses also aided in tracking down Gatta Sow, with him being arrested in the Edwards area at about 10:45 p.m. on October 26.

Gatta Sow was formally charged with a number of offenses, including charges in both Avon and Vail.

Here’s a breakdown of what he was charged with:
