CU announces big changes after $50K fine related to ‘F*** the Mormons’ chant
During the September 27 college football game between University of Colorado and Brigham Young University at Boulder’s Folsom Field, fans in the student section reportedly chanted “F*** BYU” and “F*** the Mormons.” As a result of the chanting, the Big 12 conference fined CU $50,000, with conference commissioner reiterating that “hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference.”
After the hefty fine and plenty of criticism, CU Athletics has announced new procedures around fan behavior in an effort to prevent a similar situation from happening again.
According to a press release from CU Boulder, changes to be implemented during the Iowa State home game on October 11 include:
- Streamlined communication between fans and stadium security personnel with a hotline available for fans to text should an incident arise. The number for that hotline is 720-812-1769.
- Increased security personnel both inside and outside of the stadium, including in the student section.
- Plain-clothed police officers in various sections of the stadium who are able to conduct immediate fan removals.
- Increased security response teams throughout the stadium.
- The installation of new technology that can proactively monitor fan behavior in the stadium.
According to the university, violations of the established ‘Code of Conduct‘ can result in immediate removal from a game and could mean a loss of ticket privileges for the rest of the season. A press release on the matter stressed that this could mean removing entire rows of sections of fans if disruptive behavior occurs. “Disruptive behavior” includes offensive or discriminatory chanting, as well as gestures and throwing of items.
“It is our goal to make Folsom Field a welcoming and inclusive place for every fan and your cooperation is appreciated,” reads the press release.
