Snowboarder partially buried in avalanche in East Vail
A snowboarder was caught, carried, and partially buried in an avalanche in the East Vail area on Jan. 9.
According to a Instagram post from Friends of Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), the rider was pinned against a tree and unable to self-extricate. Fortunately, their partner skinned up to the burial location and provided assistance.
The rider suffered minor injuries, according to the post.
“The much needed new snow is very exciting, and while there are many places you can travel safely, you need to be aware of where you could trigger an avalanche that could injure you or worse,” the post reads. “In the places with a deeper snowpack, you can trigger the largest avalanches. In other places, the avalanches you might trigger will be smaller but still potentially dangerous in consequential terrain.”
Following the recent snowfall, the CAIC reports moderate to considerable avalanche danger across many Colorado mountains. Certain ranges including parts of the San Juan, Park Range, Elk, and West Elk mountains have considerable danger, meaning human-triggered avalanches are more likely.
