Semi truck blown off road and into lake amid gusty conditions in Colorado
Strong winds have been present around much of Colorado on Friday, but on Thursday afternoon, the true power of gusty conditions was put on display, as well.
According to a January 15 post from West Metro Fire, strong winds along the hogback on Highway 470 pushed a semi truck carrying a trailer off the pavement and down an embankment. Ultimately, the truck ended up stuck in the water of Little Soda Lake, located in the Morrison area.
Thankfully, the driver was determined to be uninjured after a medical evaluation, with the situation providing an important lesson when it comes to traveling in high profile vehicles amid gusty conditions.
Semi trucks can be particularly at risk of flipping on windy days (a factor in various road closures around the state on Friday), though passenger vehicles with a large side profiles can be problematic, too – camper vans and RVs being two examples of potentially at-risk vehicles.
If you’re concerned about your vehicle on a windy day, heed the advice posted by the National Weather Service. Alerts are generally created when weather conditions result in unsafe conditions. Find relevant alerts by clicking into the map here.
