Popular mountain town ice rink that’s free to visit closes early due to unsafe conditions amid warm winter
A popular mountain town ice rink found at about 8,700 feet of elevation has closed early and for the remainder of the season amid a warm winter.
Per a press release from the Town of Silverthorne, the ice rink at North Pond Park – which opened on January 14 – is already closed for the season due to conditions being too unsafe for proper maintenance. Thin ice signs have been placed at the rink, with the public asked to exercise caution around the ice.
Originally, it was planned that the ice rink would be plowed and maintained through early March, offering free skating access from dawn to dusk.
Located in Summit County, this ice rink’s closure provides yet another example of how a warmer-than-normal and drier-than-normal winter is impacting outdoor recreation in Colorado – even in parts of the state found at a higher elevation where wintery weather typically rears its head more frequently.
