23-year-old e-biker killed after failing to follow stop sign laws in Colorado

An e-bike crash that took place in Fort Collins has turned fatal, according to a report from Colorado State Patrol.

According to a press release on the matter, the crash took place on May 22 around 4:51 p.m. in the area of South Timberline Road and East Lincoln Avenue, which is just north of Kingfisher Point, Cattail Chorus, and Riverbend Ponds natural areas on the eastern edge of the city. An e-bike operated by a 23-year-old male was headed eastbound on East Lincoln Avenue, approaching an intersection with South Timberline, on which a red Lincoln SUV was traveling northbound. This intersection was described as a two-way stop, with stop signs only found on East Lincoln Avenue.

Per the Colorado State Patrol report, the e-biker failed to stop at the stop sign and went through the intersection, getting struck by the SUV. The e-bike rider was thrown from the bike as a result of the crash, soon transported to a hospital before succumbing to his injuries three days later on May 25.

In Colorado, those on bicycles are able to take advantage of a ‘safety stop’ rule, which allows anyone 15 years of age or older who is on a bike to treat a stop sign as a yield sign and a stop light as a stop sign in many cases, traveling no more than 10 miles per hour through stop signs at an intersection after ensuring that no oncoming traffic is headed their way. While this 2022 change is meant to make Colorado’s roads safer for cyclists, it can’t be stressed enough that yielding to all oncoming traffic is crucial.

Condolences go out to those impacted by the e-biker’s death.
