Child drowns in Cherry Creek Reservoir
A child died after drowning at Cherry Creek Reservoir’s swim beach area on Saturday.
According to a press release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), witnesses told CPW that two children were on a float near the Cherry Creek State Park swim beach at around 4 p.m. One child left the float in shallow water and walked back to the shore.
The other child stayed on the float and floated into deeper water on the reservoir. Witnesses saw the child go under the water at 4:25 p.m. A CPW park ranger and other park visitors jumped into the reservoir to attempt to rescue the child. South Metro Fire Rescue’s dive team was also conducting water rescue training in another part of the park and quickly responded to the scene.
CPW said that within five minutes, divers were searching near the swim beach. The West Metro Fire dive team and Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the response.
Sadly, the victim was recovered by CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team at 10:20 p.m.
CPW also said that neither child on the float was wearing a life jacket.
The Arapahoe County Coroner will release the child’s identity and age.
