Person found dead on climbing route in Rocky Mountain National Park
A person was found dead on a popular route up Longs Peak, a Colorado fourteener, on Sunday, according to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) officials.
In a statement, RMNP officials said that members with the RMNP Search and Rescue team responded after receiving a report of an incident involving an individual on Kiener’s Route on the early afternoon of Sunday. Kiener’s Route is located on the upper east face of Longs Peak.
The individual was found deceased. Kiener’s Route was closed overnight and reopened on Monday morning after recovery operations were finished. The Teton Interagency Helitak crew helped RMNP personnel in recovery operations.
The incident is under investigation. There is no further information available at this time.
The American Alpine Institute says that Kiener’s Route is the easiest option up Longs’ east face. However, the website also notes that it is an entry-level route into intermediate alpine climbing and “should not be taken lightly.”
