Another day of critical wildfire danger is on tap for Denver and the Front Range on Tuesday.
The National Weather Service in Boulder has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Interstate 25 urban corridor and Colorado’s northeastern plains from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
“Gusty winds will first start in the Denver area by noon, eventually spreading into eastern Larimer and Weld counties by mid to late afternoon,” the weather service said.
The unseasonably warm and dry conditions, coupled with winds that could gust up to 30 mph make the situation particularly dangerous, forecasters said.
“Conditions will be favorable for rapid fire spread. Avoid outdoor burning and any activity that may produce a spark and start a wildfire,” the weather service said.
Meteorologists predict the fire conditions will get increasingly more dangerous as the week progresses with critical conditions on Thursday and extremely critical conditions on Friday and Saturday.
A ground stop was issued Tuesday morning at Denver International Airport, shortly after 8 a.m., due to wind and weather conditions, according to an automated air traffic control alert on X. There were 48 flight delays and no cancelations at the Denver airport as of 8:50 a.m., according to Flight Aware, a flight tracking website.
Temperatures are expected to hit 72 degrees in Denver on Tuesday under mostly sunny skies, forecasters said. That’s about 18 degrees warmer than the seasonal average for March 10 in Denver and only 7 degrees shy of the all-time record reached most recently in 1989, according to weather service archive data.
A cold front moves through Colorado’s eastern plains tonight, forecasters said, which could bring gusts as high as 50-60 mph. Blowing dust is possible in some areas between 6 and 10 p.m.
Meteorologists said to expect light mountain snow showers Tuesday night and a chance for rain or snow along the northeastern plains.
In Denver tonight, expect the temperatures to drop to 32 degrees with breezy winds and gusts up to 37 mph, the weather service said. A slight cold front will drop highs to the mid 50s in Denver on Wednesday, forecasters said.
