Swimming banned in Big Soda Lake due to blue-green algae

Lakewood officials on Monday barred people from swimming in Big Soda Lake in Bear Creek Lake Park because of harmful levels of blue-green algae.

People are still allowed to paddleboard, kayak or canoe on the lake as long as they rinse their boards after they leave the water, according to a news release.

Staff will monitor the algae levels, but officials said they weren’t sure when the lake would reopen to swimmers.
