Colorado company aims to launch world’s largest firework and you can attend the event
One mountain town company has their eyes set on breaking the world record for largest single shell firework ever launched – once again.
Steamboat Fireworks, out of Steamboat Springs, Colorado hopes to launch a 62-inch shell into the air on February 8th at the town’s Winter Carnival, following a failed attempt at breaking the same record in 2019. If all goes as planned this time around, the roughly 2,500-pound shell will blast from a 26-foot deep hole in the ground on launch day, sending hundreds of comets across the sky upon explosion.
A lot goes into making this shell, including more than 60 miles of packing tape – a key ingredient in the outer casing. Get a look at the process in the video below.
More than 400 comets weighing 900 pounds are going into the record-breaking firework. The completed shell will weigh more than 2,500 pounds.

Visitors to the festival are able to watch the launch from Howelsen Hill and the Emerald Mountain area in Steamboat Springs.
Last year, the launch flopped when the shell exploded inside the underground mortar tube used to blast the explosive orb into the air. Had the launch been successful, the shell would likely have sailed more than a mile into the sky. The current record was set in the United Arab Emirates with a shell weighing in at 1,087.26 kilograms (2,397 pounds) on January 1, 2018.
Follow along in days leading up to the launch on the company website or Facebook page.
