More I-70 closures, detours, lane changes in Denver over weekend

Interstate 70 will close in both directions between Brighton Boulevard and Interstate 270 over the weekend for construction as part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Central 70 Project.

The closure will begin Friday at 10 p.m. and end Monday at 5 a.m.

As a detour, drivers heading westbound on I-70 should go north on I-270, west on Interstate 76, south onto Interstate 25 and then exit onto I-70.

Drivers heading eastbound on I-70 should go north on I-25, east on I-76, south on I-270 and then exit onto I-70.

The Brighton on-ramp to eastbound I-70 and the eastbound I-70 off-ramps to York and Steele/Vasquez will remain open to traffic.

Intermittent lane closures will also begin Friday on Colorado Boulevard at I-70. The closures begin Friday at 8 p.m. and end Saturday at 9 a.m.

Beginning Monday, eastbound I-70 traffic between Holly and Quebec streets will shift to the outer lanes.

The Central 70 Project is reconstructing a 10-mile stretch of I-70, adding an Express Lane in each direction, removing the 56-year-old viaduct and lowering the interstate between Brighton and Colorado boulevards.

This weekend’s I-70 closure will allow crews to demolish the remaining portion of the Colorado Boulevard bridge.

Full weekend closures such as this one allow construction crews to quickly complete work that could take months of nightly lane closures, CDOT said.

This work is weather-dependent and subject to change.
