World War II hand grenades prompt Aurora Municipal Campus closure

Aurora Municipal Campus

The Aurora Municipal Campus reopened around 1 p.m. Friday after a community member brought three World War II-era hand grenades to the site after it was closed for more than a hour.

Police said the community member brought the explosives to the campus for proper disposal. A police spokesperson said in an email the call came in around 10:25 a.m., and the building was evacuated shortly after.

The person received the grenades from an ancestor, said the spokesperson, adding that it’s not uncommon for people to inherit such relics from family members who served in prior wars.

The resident did not bring the grenades inside the facility, police said.

Many grenades from the era have turned up in America as trophies brought home by World War II troops who served in the Pacific.

The Type 97 grenade was the standard grenade of the Japanese Army during World War II. The one-pound grenade includes about two ounces of TNT. When detonated, the grenades is designed to split into a cloud of deadly shrapnel.

Buckley Space Force Base and Arapahoe County bomb disposal experts were called to handle the grenades the explosives, police said.
