Jamal Murray made another shot.

Murray’s second game-winning shot in five first-round games sent the Lakers packing, 108-106, on Monday at Ball Arena. Following Murray’s game-winner over Anthony Davis in Game 2, the Lakers forward succinctly summarized the biggest shot of the series up to that point.

“Jamal Murray made a shot,” Davis said, dropping the microphone on the table and walking off after Denver’s second win of the series.

At the end of Game 5, LeBron James made a couple of clutch free throws to tie the game with 26 seconds left. Murray calmly walked the ball up court, narrowly avoiding an eight-second violation. During his stroll, he looked to the bench where he and Nuggets coach Michael Malone decided not to use a timeout and settled on the play call.

“We knew what we were going to get to,” Murray said. “We wanted to get the last shot. … That was the timeout. I’m an extension of him (Malone) out there, so I was able to relay the message. Everybody got to their spot. I got to mine, and we were able to close it out.”

Once he got to the front court with just under 20 seconds left, Murray used a screen from Nikola Jokic to create some separation from Austin Reaves who guarded Murray well throughout the series. With a step on Reaves and Anthony Davis in no-man’s land between Murray and Jokic, Denver’s starting point guard got to his spot and sunk his signature step-back jumper with 3.6 seconds left.

“Let the best two-man game in the business play their game and get to their spots,” Malone said after his team advanced to the second round for the fifth time in the last six seasons. “For Jamal to add to his playoff lore by having two game-winners in a series is just incredible.”

After Los Angeles coach Darvin Ham used his final timeout on a challenge that kept Nikola Jokic off the line with a few minutes left, the Lakers were left to settle for a half-court heave from Taurean Prince just before the buzzer that wasn’t close.

Thanks to the final bucket, Murray led all scorers with 32 points on 13-of-28 shooting. It was his most efficient shooting night of the series, and he made 5 of the 10 3-pointers he attempted.

“He’s a tough-shot maker,” Jokic said. “He makes more tough shots than easy, open looks. That’s my opinion. I think he loves those moments, loves those situations. I’m really confident in him that he’s going to make the shot.”

Before the game-winner, his highlight of the night was a cutting dunk over LeBron James, despite Murray saying his vertical leap was the most concerning part of his injury. James blocked a few of Murray’s shots in the first four games, including an earlier dunk attempt. Murray said he was challenging James throughout the series to go for blocks.

“It’s just fun to have that kind of back and forth with one of the greats,”

Murray added seven assists against two turnovers, three rebounds and a steal in nearly 41 minutes of playing time. It was quite the workload for a player who had a conversation with his coach and the training staff prior to the game to see if he would be available after straining his left calf in the second half of Saturday’s Game 4 in Los Angeles. Malone described the conversation as “emotional,”

“As he just told me, he goes ‘I’m glad I played, because I don’t know if we win if I don’t play tonight.’ I said ‘Well, that’s the understatement of the year.’ The kid’s a warrior, man,” Malone said. “I just can’t say enough good things about Jamal Murray. The bigger the moment, the kid just continues to shine. I’m proud of him. (That’s) one tough cookie.”

Murray said he showed up to the arena early to get a gauge on how he was feeling. He said he was told not to play before convincing the coaching and training staffs that he was good to go.

“They just didn’t want me to risk it. They told me no,” Murray said.

“I didn’t say no, so I just didn’t want to leave my teammates out there, you know. We’ve been battling all season. Everybody’s hurt at some point. Everybody’s going through something. I just wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I wasn’t able to play this game. So, we just did everything we could and got a lot of people in the room to talk about the plan. … I’m just glad they listened to me, they listened to me listen to my body.”

Nikola Jokic added 25 points, 20 rebounds and nine assists for Denver, though he committed seven of Denver’s 14 turnovers. Michael Porter Jr. was the only other Nugget in double figures with 26 points. LeBron James led the Lakers with 30 points on 21 shots, while Anthony Davis added 17 points and 15 rebounds.

After eliminating the Lakers for a second consecutive season, Murray, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who suffered a left ankle injury early in Monday’s game, and the rest of the Nuggets have until Saturday to get healthy before starting the rematch of last year’s first-round series against Minnesota at Ball Arena.

“He was able to win the game, and he didn’t get hurt,” Malone said. “So, it was a great night all the way around.”
