Statewide Amber Alert test set for Wednesday

Amber Alert

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation will conduct a statewide test of its Amber Alert notification system on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

The test follows the organization’s recent decision to move away from some elements of its X (Twitter) landing page.

CBI spokesperson Rob Low said that various changes to the social media platform and concerns for public access to information led CBI to create an in-house solution to bypass the character count in the wireless emergency alert limits imposed on links included in its Wireless Emergency Alert System (WEA) messages.

Links included in CBI WEA messages will soon link to a permanent CBI Alerts landing page rather than to the organization’s X (Twitter) landing page.

The link to the new page aims to be platform-agnostic.

“This test is to ensure that the redirect of the link to the new solution functions appropriately,” he said.

In most cases, the WEA alert test feature is not enabled by default on mobile devices. However, a CBI statement notes those who have enabled test alerts will receive a notification but should not be alarmed.

No action is required.

Shortened redirect links in WEA messages are not new, said Low.

“However, we hope having the landing spot in-house allows for direct public access of alerting information regardless of individual social media accounts held by the public wishing to help.”

This test comes just three days before National Missing Children’s Day on May 25.

Low notes that alerts will still be posted to CBI social media platforms but will link to the new landing page.

“It’s our goal to ensure as much information that can be sent via the WEA system can be seen by as many people as possible to garner public assistance in child abductions and other alerts,” he said.
