The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man who allegedly started a wildfire with a firework at Gregory Canyon in west Boulder on Monday.
City of Boulder Fire-Rescue crews responded to a report of a small wildland fire at Gregory Canyon near the base of Flagstaff Road around 9:30 p.m.
Responders were able to quickly extinguish the “spreading” fire, limiting the damage to an area of 100 by 100 feet, according to a press release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
The area at Flagstaff Road was temporarily closed and later reopened, according to the release.
A 21-year-old man was found near the scene and was arrested on suspicion of second-degree arson, a Class 4 felony.
The man was booked into the Boulder County Jail. His identification is being withheld by the sheriff’s office pending additional investigation.
As the Fourth of July holiday and summer approaches, the sheriff’s office urged all residents and visitors to “be mindful of the heightened fire danger in our area.”
The office noted that people should:
-
Avoid using machinery that creates sparks, such as lawnmowers, chainsaws and welding equipment, especially in dry grassy areas, near wooded regions, and on windy days
-
Refrain from using fireworks
-
Properly extinguish campfires and dispose of cigarettes
While fireworks that do not leave the ground or explode are legal in Colorado, they are banned entirely within the city of Boulder.
