Snowstorm leaves total of 19 .2 inches at Denver airport

Although the snowstorm that ended Saturday failed to meet the worst-case scenario in most of the metro area, wintery conditions did cause problems — and Denver International Airport ended up with a final reading of 19.2 inches of snow.

Conditions were worst on the Eastern Plains, and Gov. Jared Polis earlier mobilized the Colorado National Guard to assist with rescue of stranded motorists. More than 30 inches of snow had fallen in parts of Lincoln County.

Snow continued to splatter through the metro Friday evening into Saturday morning, bringing about a few inches of snow to various parts of the city — still much less than the up-to-13 inches of fresh snow the National Weather Service previously forecast for overnight — but road closures, power outages and flight delays are still striking the region Saturday morning.

As of Saturday afternoon, over 400 incoming and outgoing flights were delayed at Denver International Airport. Over 70 flights were cancelled, according to FlightAware. Overall, the amount is a significant drop from the over 400 flights canceled Friday and nearly 500 canceled on Thursday.

As of Saturday morning, Xcel Energy reported over 24,000 customers without power in the metro, with the brunt of the outages south of the city near Littleton. More than 18,000 were still without power Saturday afternoon.

The energy company, who noted its preparation for the storm in a press release on Friday, has extra crews working to restore power to customers.

Regarding road closures, areas east of Denver are still seeing significant impacts from the nearly three-day storm.

Road closures, as of Saturday afternoon, included:

  • I-70 Westbound Goodland Kansas to Deer Trail
  • US 6 Eastbound/Westbound Loveland Pass
  • US 24 Eastbound/Westbound Calhan to Limon
  • US 24 Eastbound/Westbound Seibert to Burlington
  • US 160 Eastbound/Westbound from US 350 Junction to CO 389 Junction
  • US 160 Eastbound/Westbound from Kim to US 385 Junction
  • CO 10 Eastbound/Westbound from Walsenburg to La Junta
  • CO 59 Northbound/Southbound from Cope to Kit Carson
  • CO 71 Northbound/Southbound from Last Chance to Punkin Center
  • CO 86 Eastbound/Westbound from Elizabeth to I-70
  • CO 94 Eastbound/Westbound from El Paso County line to US 40/287 Junction
  • CO 101 Northbound/ Southbound from Las Animas to Toonerville
  • CO 109 Northbound/Southbound from La Junta to Kim
  • CO 389 Northbound/Southbound from New Mexico state line to US 160 Junction

Upcoming forecast

Luckily, the brunt of the snowstorms, which began on Wednesday and lasted until Saturday morning, is over.

The cold and wet conditions that have hampered Colorado for the last week will seize on Sunday, with sunny skies and highs of 53, according to the National Weather Service Boulder.

This trend of warmer weather is expected to continue through the week, with highs in the mid 50s every day next week, peaking with highs of 60 on Thursday.
