Denver police arrested a 30-year-old man after a Wednesday night shooting left one injured near Coors Field.
Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 2100 block of Market Street — a block from Coors Field in the Ballpark District — around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, according to a news release from the Denver Police Department.
X user Matt (@rmr1521) showed video of the heavy police presence and reported hearing scanner traffic that “10-15 rounds” were fired and police were looking for shell casings.
Upon arrival, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the hand. He was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The shooter also allegedly threatened another person before fleeing the scene.
With the help of witnesses, police identified and later arrested 30-year-old Dennis Armstrong on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, felony menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm.
Final charges will be decided by the Denver District Attorney’s Office following investigations.
The neighborhood has seen a plethora of shootings over the past few years.
A few examples:
- 17-year-old Keanna Rosenburgh shot five people outside of Dierks Bentley Whiskey Row at 1946 Market St. on Sept. 16, 2023.
- Ten people were shot in the area of 20th and Market Street, including a suspect, just after midnight on June 13, 2023 after the Denver Nuggets secured the NBA Championship.
- On July 17, 2022, near 20th and Market Street, a Denver patrol officer shot and injured seven people, including six bystanders who were directly behind a suspect as the bars were letting out.
In a news conference after an officer-involved shooting in the area on Aug. 3, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said that the department has seen a “significant reduction” in he violence in the area due to some of their mitigation efforts — like dispersing nightlife crowds through dedicated rideshare areas and banning food trucks from the area on weekend nights.
