Update indicates dead campers were found in same area that violent screams were reported

Many outdoor recreators around America have likely been following along with a case in which two campers were found dead at Michigan’s remote and rugged Isle Royale National Park on June 8. As the investigation into these deaths has continued, officials have released another update.

According to the park, the two individuals who were found have been identified and next of kin has been notified. That said, their names have not been publicly released at this time.

Another key part of the most recent update was that the deceased campers were indeed found at South Lake Desor Campground, which is where a Redditor reported hearing screams on the night of June 6, roughly two days before the bodies of the campers were found. No official connection has been made between those screams and the deaths of these campers, though this latest update appears to provide a little more support in regard to widespread speculation that’s been posted online. Until an official confirmation is published, however, that remains speculation and should be treated as such.

As it relates to the conversation about this situation, it’s important to note how remote Isle Royale is – fewer than 30,000 people visit each year during the park’s 199-day season of operation. Last year, about 145 people visited per day on average, with the park spanning a space that’s 45 miles long and nine miles wide – only reachable by water vessel or seaplane.

South Lake Desor Campground is found along one of the more popular trails at the park – Greenstone Ridge Trail. It’s about 11 miles down this trail from the main area of development on the island, with the trail continuing for another 28.5 miles.

As far as the Reddit report related to the screams goes, the Redditor reported that at least three other sites at the campground were occupied when their party made the late-night decision to pack up and leave due to what was heard. Safety was expressed as a concern.

The Redditor described the situation as follows:

“Latrine door slammed a few times and then the yelling started. It was repetitive, filled with threats of self-harm and violence toward others. And it was relentless. We felt unsafe and decided pack up and get out. After hiking about a half-mile, we could still hear him screaming. I was not aware a person could scream that loud for that long. I got a signal at a high point and called 911. This morning we all shared as much as we could with the ranger.”

Following multiple reports related to the bodies of campers being found, rangers started a long overnight trek on June 7, reaching the campground and confirming the camper deaths on June 8.

As noted, any sort of connections between this Redditor’s report, posted on the afternoon of June 7 prior to when the bodies were found, has yet to be addressed by officials.

Look for more details related to the case, including the cause-of-deaths of the campers, in upcoming days.

Condolences go out to those impacted by these camper deaths.

Editor’s Note: This piece includes online speculation about the case, with this information included in this piece because this speculation has been so relevant in the online discussion about the camper deaths. These details are merely speculation. Any sort of link between the initial report of screaming that’s mentioned and the campers’ deaths has not been addressed or confirmed by authorities involved in the investigation.
