Someone is shooting wild rabbits with blow darts in the Denver metro area
Someone has been shooting wild rabbits with blow darts or a blowgun-style weapon in Aurora, and authorities are trying to track down the culprit.
According to a press release from the city, animal control officers have taken five reports of rabbits being hit with the darts in recent weeks. One of those rabbits died as a result of injuries that were sustained.
The first four incidents were reported between July 15 and August 15, with a fifth incident reported on August 19. All of the incidents took place in the Southlands area, near the intersection of East Glasgow Place and South White Crow Way. This intersection is located just south of Aurora Reservoir on the edge of the city.
“Just because an animal isn’t a traditional pet, doesn’t mean we won’t look out for their wellbeing,” said Animal Control Officer Lucas Barr. “These darts cause internal bleeding as well as infection that can cause severe pain before the animal will succumb to their injuries. Deliberately harming an animal is something our agency takes seriously, and we will investigate it thoroughly.”
Authorities have requested that anyone who spots a similarly injured or deceased rabbit reports it. If a suspect is caught, it’s possible that animal cruelty charges could apply with a conviction leading to potential fines and jail time.
Anyone with information related to the case should call 303-326-8288, with the Animal Control Dispatch line being option 6. Animal Control Dispatch is staffed seven days a week, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Per Aurora Municipal Code, it is unlawful to discharge a blowgun within city limits.
