What would happen if national guard troops deploy in Denver? Mayor provides response

In case you haven’t heard, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has been participating in an ‘Ask Me Anything’ Reddit discussion on the website’s Denver-based forum on August 27. For those unaware of what this ‘AMA’ style of interview is, it’s when a person or business invites the public to ask whatever questions they’d like, which are then answered on a rolling basis.

Just a couple hours in, more than 600 comments have been added to the thread by Reddit users, with Johnston now starting to provide his responses. Many of the questions posed by Redditors touch on topics of homelessness, dangerous driving, and development projects, though a question related to another subject quickly rose to the top of the thread: “What plans do you have in place if Denver is occupied by the national guard?,” posed by Redditor solarcowherder.

The question likely stems from recent reports related to the claim that 1,700 National Guard troops could be deployed to 19 states to help with deportation efforts. While Colorado wasn’t on a list that’s been circulating of states where potential deployment would occur, the interest in the question posed in the Mike Johnston AMA shows that this topic is one locals are following.

One of the first questions that Johnston tackled, his reply related to any national guard deployment in Denver was as follows:

“The militarization of our cities by President Trump is unprecedented, dangerous. Any first year law student in America could tell you that deploying the US military on the streets of American cities in times of peace to enforce domestic law is clearly illegal. Denver does not need any help from the national guard as we are seeing the largest decrease of violent crime of any top 50 city in the country. We will be prepared to take them to court on day 1 if they threaten to do so. Bringing in the National Guard to occupy our neighborhoods is never the right way to address challenges — it only escalates tensions instead of solving problems.”

So, there you have it – that appears to be where Mayor Johnston stands related to any deployment of national guard troops in Denver, with legal action being his proposed response.
