Colorado State Patrol giving away wheel locks to avoid car theft. How can you snag one?
The Colorado State Patrol is partnering with an auto theft prevention organization to hand out free steering wheel locks throughout the week and at a giveaway event on Saturday.
So, how can motorists snag their own wheel lock?
Between Monday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 500 wheel locks are available for free at CSP’s headquarters building at 700 Kipling St., located north of the 6th Avenue freeway intersection. Sign ups for those pickups are required online. A giveaway event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Motorists are asked to provide Colorado vehicle registration upon arrival. And that’s it. The wheel lock is free.
As of Tuesday, free wheel locks remain available, with more lock giveaways coming down the pike, according to CSP.
“Basic additional security measures, like these steering wheel locks, are quick, easy to use, and effective means to deter and prevent auto theft,” CSP officials said in a news release.
Wheel locks typically cost between $30 to $60.
Wheel lock giveaways are an effort to mitigate a vehicle theft issue that has plagued Colorado in recent years. So many, in fact, CSP in June released the most popular types of vehicles stolen in the state.
Chevrolet Silverado’s, Hyundai Elantra’s and Sonata’s, Chevrolet Sierra’s and Ford F-150 and F-250 trucks topped the list for stolen vehicles in Colorado last year.

Vehicle thefts are actually trending down in Colorado, but numbers still remain high, according to CSP.
Denver, for example, experienced a drop from 23,578 vehicle thefts in 2023 to 17,174 vehicle thefts in 2024.
“While auto theft continues to decline in Colorado, vehicle theft by volume remains high,” CSP officials said, adding it influences other crimes in Colorado.
“The risk to individuals and communities across the State is ever-present,” state patrol officials added. “The theft of a single vehicle often leads to additional serious crimes. Preventing vehicle theft is a significant step towards reducing all crime in Colorado.”
