RTD to begin week-long Kalamath Street closure for rail reconstruction work

As part of its continuing light rail track reconstruction project, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) will close Kalamath Street between Speer Boulevard and Colfax Avenue for a week starting Sunday.

The closure will replace the current lane shift through Oct. 26 as the RTD continues its multi-year, $152 million project to reconstruct miles of light rail track through downtown Denver for long-term reliability and safety, according to a Monday news release. The current 86-day work period, focusing on the crossing near the intersection of Kalamath and Colfax, is scheduled to be completed on Nov. 27.

“RTD is dedicated to keeping the community and customers informed about progress and timelines during these kinds of infrastructure projects,” said the agency’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Angel Peña in the release. “The work sequencing on Kalamath Street allows us to minimize the duration of the full street closure and complete the Kalamath Street crossing construction as quickly as possible.”

During the week-long closure, vehicles traveling south on Champa Street will be required to turn left onto southbound Speer Boulevard, according to the release. Pedestrians and bicyclists going southbound on either Kalamath or 10th Street on the Auraria Campus will continue to be detoured west to 9th Street and Colfax to access the bus stop east of Colfax at Auraria Station.

Local access will be available during the closure, and crews may work as late as 9 p.m. during the week and 5 p.m. on weekends to finish the work quicker, the release says. All construction work is schedule- and weather-dependent and could change.

As has been the case since the 86-day period began on Sept. 15, the RTD will continue the following changes to the light rail service while the work is ongoing:

  • The D Line is rerouted to serve Union Station; riders can connect to the Downtown Loop using the 16th Street FreeRide or Free MetroRide.
  • The Downtown Loop will not service Colfax at Auraria Station; the bus stop east of Colfax at Auraria Station will stay open to serve Bus Route 16.
  • The H Line will operate between the Florida and Southmoor stations, though there will be no service between Southmoor and the Downtown. Loop; riders will need to transfer with the E Line at Southmoor
  • The L Line is suspended; riders can use Bus Route 43 instead.
