Nuggets vs. Timberwolves | 3 takeaways from Denver’s best win of season

The nights of the Timberwolves bullying the Nuggets at Target Center appear to have ended.

Here are three takeaways from Denver’s 123-112 win Saturday in Minneapolis.

1. The win streak sits at seven after the most impressive win of the stretch. The Nuggets played their first game without Christian Braun and Cam Johnson in the starting lineup against a full-strength Timberwolves team. Nikola Jokic struggled with some uncharacteristic turnovers. The Timberwolves started much hotter from 3-point range, but Denver’s depth came up huge behind the big offensive nights from Jokic, Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon and Tim Hardaway Jr. After being swept in four regular-season meetings last season, the Nuggets have won consecutive games in Minneapolis to start this season. A split of the last two games in Denver, and the Nuggets will secure the season tiebreaker over their recent rivals. Jokic finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to offset his six turnovers, while Murray, Gordon and Hardaway added 23 points apiece.

2. Tim Hardaway Jr. is looking like one of the league’s best bargains. He made all but one of his first five attempts from 3-point range and finished with a season-high scoring night. The ability to space the floor and knock down the shots that came his way was especially important with Hardaway spending more time alongside Jokic and the starters in place of Braun, who will miss at least six weeks after spraining his ankle against the Clippers on Wednesday. He finished 6 of 8 from the field and made all six of his free throws.

3. Peyton Watson led the defensive charge against Anthony Edwards, who’s been one of the Nuggets’ toughest covers in recent seasons. Watson started in place of Johnson and immediately picked up Edwards on the possessions Denver wasn’t using a zone defense. Edwards missed his first five attempts from 3-point range and failed to score efficiently beyond the free-throw line. Watson missed some shots around the rim on the other end, but the defensive work gave his new representatives, Klutch, something to work with ahead of his restricted free agency next summer. Watson finished with 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and a block, while Edwards needed 23 shots to score 26 points.

NUGGETS 123, TIMBERWOLVES 112

What happened: Minnesota led by one after the first quarter and took a 60-55 lead at halftime. Denver regained a one-point lead to start the fourth and held on to improve to 10-2 on the season.

What went right: Katy Winge was back on the Altitude broadcast for the first time since she announced her father’s unexpected death last week. The Minnesota native was able to make her return in front of family in the stands, and the broadcast was immediately better for having her back.

What went wrong: The NBA’s live stats went down late in the third quarter. The score and number of team fouls were tracked in real time, but individual stats were not available until well after the game ended, sending sports bettors into a tizzy.

Highlight of the night: Jamal Murray scooped a one-handed pass through traffic early in the second quarter, and Aaron Gordon provided a strong finishing touch. Murray got into the middle of the Timberwolves defense and hit Gordon under the rim. Gordon wasted no time and went up for a reverse dunk.

Up next: The Nuggets are headed back to Denver for Monday’s game against the Bulls at Ball Arena.
