20-year-old Telluride resident sentenced for attempted child sex assault, sex exploitation
A 20-year-old Telluride resident was sentenced to four years in prison Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to several child sexual exploitation charges.
Raef Buttars, 20, plead guilty to attempted sexual assault on a child, attempted internet exploitation of a child, possessing child sexual exploitation material, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and giving alcohol to a minor, according to social media posts by the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office.
Additionally, Buttars agreed to pay more than $8,000 in court fines and participate in treatment programs relating to his offense, according to the posts. All the crimes took place in San Miguel County. The office is not releasing any information about the victims due to the nature of the crimes.
“We are horrified that these heinous crimes against children occurred, especially within our own community,” Sheriff Dan Covault said in the posts. “While nothing can ever erase the trauma these children and their families have endured, we hope this sentence offers them some measure of solace.”
Buttars is currently being held in the San Miguel County Jail and will be moved to a state prison at a to-be-determined date, the office said.
