Aurora police arrest suspect in arson case after several fires in cars, apartments

Aurora police arrested an arson suspect Tuesday morning in a case involving a series of fires last week.

Aurora Police Department officers arrested Michael Anthony Lopez, 30, on multiple charges of arson, including second and fourth-degree arson, according to a news release.

Lopez is in custody at the Aurora Municipal Detention Center on $50,000 bond pending his first appearance in Adams County District Court.

Aurora Fire Rescue crews responded to multiple fires in vegetation, portable toilets, vehicles and apartment buildings in the area of East 16th Avenue and North Norfolk Street, just south of Star K Ranch, over the last week, the release said.

Firefighters were able to work quickly to extinguish the fires and limit damage, and no injuries were reported, according to officials.

AFR Deputy Chief of Community Risk Reduction Allen Robnett said teamwork between AFR and APD was “critical” to the quick arrest.

“Our firefighters and investigators worked hand in hand with Aurora police from the initial response through the investigation,” Robnett said in the release. “That collaboration allowed us to quickly address the fires, identify a suspect and take action to keep our neighborhoods safe.”

The investigation is ongoing. The Adams County District Attorney’s Office will file formal charges.
