Broncos activate LB Karene Reid off IR, add DB Tanner McCalister, OL Geron Christian to practice squad

The Broncos might have their 53-man roster set for the start of the playoffs.

Denver on Tuesday activated rookie linebacker Karene Reid off injured reserve to fill an open spot. They also signed defensive back Tanner McAlister to the practice squad and the agent for offensive lineman Geron Christian told The Denver Gazette that his client, waived Monday, will sign with the Broncos’ practice squad.

The Broncos had a open roster spot after Monday when they waived Christian and tight end Marcedes Lewis and promoted quarterback Sam Ehlinger from the practice squad. If the Broncos had not activated Reid by Tuesday, he would have had to spend the rest of the season on injured reserve after he was designated for return Dec. 17.

Reid missed the last seven games after suffering a hamstring injury Nov. 5 against Las Vegas. However, he has been a full participant in practices in recent weeks.

McCalister appeared in three games with Denver in 2024 before being waived in June. He was then with the New York Jets in training camp and spent the bulk of 2025 on Kansas City’s practice squad without getting into a game. He will provide depth with safety P.J. Locke having missed the second half of last Sunday’s 19-3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers with a leg injury.

Christian’s agent, Vince Taylor, said his client, who cleared waivers Tuesday, will be on the Broncos’ practice squad when they return to practice Friday in preparation for the postseason. Christian had been plucked Nov. 11 off Dallas’ practice squad and was inactive for all Denver games the rest of the season.

The Broncos (14-3) have a bye in the wild-card round of the playoffs and will next play in the divisional round at home Jan. 17 or 18.

Lewis, 41, also cleared waivers Tuesday but might not return to the practice squad. A source said that barring a setback, the Broncos could designate tight end Lucas Krull for return from injured reserve by opening up his 21-day practice window Friday. Krull has been out since suffering a fractured fifth metatarsal in his left foot during an Oct. 2 practice and undergoing surgery.
