Denver, Buffalo mayors place friendly wager on Broncos vs. Bills playoff game
As if the stakes could get any higher for the Broncos on Saturday.
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan are placing a friendly bet ahead of Saturday’s AFC divisional-round playoff matchup between the Broncos and the Bills.
An Instagram video posted Friday showed the phone conversation shared publicly between the two.
The terms? If the Broncos win, Ryan promised he will send Buffalo-style “atomic” wings and beer from Big Ditch Brewing Company over to the Mile High City. If the Bills play spoiler, Johnston offered to send empanadas from Denver-based Maria Empanada, along with a selection of local craft beers.
Johnston decided to raise the stakes even higher and threw in a kicker: The losing city’s mayor has to wear the winning team’s jersey and post it on social media.
Ryan was quick to remind Johnston of the Bills’ 31-7 trouncing of the Broncos just last year in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs.
“I think we were in some growing pains then,” Johnston said. “We’ve got it sorted out now with the number one seed and our sophomore quarterback.”
For the sake of the mayor’s bet, he had better hope so.
