Boulder man arrested for creating AI sex images using children’s photos

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday it had arrested a man for allegedly altering real children’s photos into sexual material using artificial intelligence.

Daniel Fairchild, 72, faces 23 counts relating to the sexual exploitation of a child, including producing the material, possessing the material and exploiting those under the age of 12, according to a Friday news release from the office.

Investigators executed a search warrant on Fairchild’s home in the 300 block of South 39th Street in Boulder on Jan. 15, and Fairchild later turned himself in on an arrest warrant, according to the release. He was booked into the Boulder County Jail under a $50,000 bond.

Officials believe that Fairchild was using the online platform PicsArt to turn photos of real human children into nude, sexually-exploitative material, according to the release. PicsArt reported the potential violations to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force sent the tip to the county for further investigation.

It’s one of the county’s Digital Forensic Lab’s first full investigaion “involving the use of generative AI to create contraband material and underscores the growing concerns surrounding potential misuse of this technology,” according to the release.

“Unfortunately, this type of conduct occurs in every community, and it is deeply troubling to see individuals exploiting technology to create (child sexual abuse material)-generated images of children,” Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in the release. “We are fortunate in Boulder County as we have a Digital Forensics Lab and they pursue this criminal conduct because the investigators fully recognize the serious and scary nature of child sexual exploitation cases.”
