Fort Collins officer arrested for asking woman for explicit photos
A Fort Collins police officer turned himself in Wednesday on suspicion of attempted sexual exploitation of a child and official misconduct.
Andrew Cirone, 31, allegedly asked a woman for explicit photos of herself from when she was a teenager, according to a Wednesday news release from Fort Collins Police Services.
“As public servants, there are clear expectations for police conduct,” said Fort Collins Chief of Police Jeff Swoboda in the release. “And while our agency cannot publicly discuss the specifics of the case right now, I want our Fort Collins community to know that we are committed to transparency even when it concerns the misconduct of one of our own employees.”
Cirone had been employed with Fort Collins Police since 2018 and was assigned to the downtown unit, according to the release.
The woman’s mom told the department about Cirone’s actions on Oct. 17 of last year, prompting an internal investigation into the matter, according to the release. Cirone was also reassigned from a public-facing role in accordance with department policy.
During that review, which included witness statements, body-worn camera footage and case reports, department officials found that Cirone had failed to abide by standard investigative protocols, violating both department and state policy, according to the release. He was placed on administrative leave on Dec. 30.
Detectives believe there may be more victims of Cirone or other people who witnessed his alleged criminal behavior. Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the department’s tip line at 970-416-2125.
