Colorado to Italy: 20-year-old Liz Lemley of Vail captures Olympic gold in freestyle moguls

– Vail’s Liz Lemley, 20, captured gold in the women’s freestyle moguls early Wednesday morning.

Lemley topped the eight-skier field with a score of 82.3 points. Fellow American Jaelin Kauf, who was born in Vail and calls Wyoming home, took silver at 80.77.

Lemley’s gold was the third of the Games for Americans and the second involving Colorado athletes. Colorado Springs pairs figure skaters Ellie Kam and Daniel O’Shea and solo skater Amber Glenn were part of the U.S. team figure skating victory.

Niklas Malacinski (Steamboat Springs) placed 18th in the Nordic combined individual normal hill 10 km Wednesday. He was second among the Americans in the field, finishing one spot behind Benajamin Loomis of Wisconsin.

– Steamboat Springs’ Madeline Schaffrick placed 15th, three spots outside of qualifying in snowboard women’s halfpipe. Americans Chloe Kim (first), Maddie Mastro (third) and Bea Kim (10th) will be part of Thursday’s finals.

Kyle Negomir (Littleton) and River Radamus (Edwards) competed in the finals of the alpine skiing men’s Super-G, with Negomir placing 26th and Radamus not finishing.

American Ryan Cochran-Siegle of Vermont took silver.

– The U.S. men’s hockey team will begin its Games when it faces Latvia at 1:10 p.m. Thursday. The team includes Brock Nelson from the Colorado Avalanche and Erie native Jaccob Slavin, who played at Colorado College and is a member of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Charlie Mickel (Durango) and Landon Wendler (Steamboat Springs) and will have a second chance at qualifying in men’s moguls at 2 a.m. Thursday.

Mickel finished 11th and Wendler 12th among the 30-skier field in Tuesday’s first round of qualifying.

Cody Winters of Steamboat Springs will compete in qualifying early Thursday in snowboard cross. Winters did not advance earlier this week in the parallel giant slalom.
