The National Weather Service (NWS), has issued a winter storm warning including parts of Colorado’s high country.

According to the NWS, the warning is in effect from 11 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Thursday. The warning includes the northwest San Juna Mountains, Telluride, Lizard Head Pass, Rabbit Ears Pass, the Elkhead and Park Mountains, Grand and Battlement Mesas and West Elk and Sawatch Mountains, Flat Tops, Gore and Elk Mountains, Central Mountain valleys.

The San Miguel Sherriff’s Office said in a social media post that heavy snow is expected, with 10-18 inches of accumulation and very strong winds. This could cause extremely difficult travel conditions, with blowing snow resulting in near zero visibility at times.

It is recommended to avoid driving during these times, according to the San Miguel Sheriff’s Office. However, the sheriff’s office said that if you must drive, be sure to keep a flashlight, food and water, and warm clothes in your car in case of an emergency.
