Driver allegedly involved in fatal snow plow crash charged with 8 misdemeanors, one traffic infraction
Charges have been filed in a fatal crash involving a snow plow and a van carrying members of a girl’s hockey team that took place on I-70 on the morning of January 29.
At the time, a preliminary investigation indicated that the crash was the result of the plow driver reportedly losing control just east of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel Complex, traveling from westbound lanes into eastbound lanes as a result. A total of four vehicles were involved – the plow, the van, and two passenger vehicles, a Toyota Tacoma and a BMW X1. Eight injuries were initially reported, along with the death of 38-year-old Manuel Alejandro Lorenzana-Villegas – the father of one of the young hockey players in the van. At last report, all injuries sustained in the crash were among those in the van. The team was traveling from California to a hockey tournament in Littleton that they would ultimately win when the crash occurred.
The driver of the plow was later identified as 29-year-old Colton A. Wiedman of Littleton. Per an April 9 press release from Colorado State Patrol, Wiedman has since been charged with multiple crimes – eight counts categorized as ‘Class 1 Traffic Misdemeanors’ and one count that’s a ‘Class A Traffic Infraction.’
The charges faced by Wiedman include:
- Careless Driving Causing Death (1 count, a Class 1 Traffic Misdemeanor)
- Careless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury (4 counts, each a Class 1 Traffic Misdemeanor)
- Careless Driving Causing Bodily Injury (3 counts, each a Class 1 Traffic Misdemeanor)
- Failure to Drive in a Designated Lane (1 count, a Class A Traffic Infraction)
The case is being handled by Colorado’s Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office. All charges are merely accusations and all suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
