Docuseries on life of extreme sports legend killed in wingsuit accident is worth the watch
Known for his larger-than-life persona and his daring feats, Dean Potter is a well-known figure in extreme sports of rock climbing, BASE jumping, alpinism, and highlining. At the age of 43, his life was cut short in a fatal 2015 wingsuit flying accident that took place at Yosemite National Park, and 11 years later, HBO has released a documentary series about his storied life.
Dubbed ‘The Dark Wizard,’ the series is set to conclude with the release of its fourth and final episode on May 5. With a current Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score of 100% and an 8.2 of 10 on IMDB, the series has gotten plenty of attention thus far, both in communities in which Potter was involved, but also from the general public. It’s been referred to by some as the ‘best documentary of 2026,’ providing a glimpse at Potter’s life in an unapologetic way that goes beyond his feats in the world of extreme sports.
Created by Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen, both of whom have heavy ties with Colorado, some have put The Dark Wizard in the same category as movies like McConkey and The Alpinist – both of which also detail the respective lives of extreme sport legends who are now deceased.
It’s also worth noting that The Dark Wizard has attracted a bit of controversy, from its inclusion of text from private journals penned by Potter to its portrayal of some auxiliary characters – Alex Honnold as a sort of competitive villain in Potter’s story arc, for example.
Controversy aside, the docuseries is worth the watch, whether one is involved in the world of extreme sports or not.
